Over the past twenty years, much of Sub-Saharan Africa, recently home to many of the world's fastest growing economies, enjoyed a major urbanization and economic development boom that pulled millions out of poverty. During that time, China positioned itself as a critical external player, bolstering trade relations across the continent and investing in critical infrastructure. A decade ago, China surpassed the United States as the number one trade partner for African countries, and for many of them today, commercial ties with China are indispensable.
