Hard Numbers: Greece vs Russia at ICC, US-bound Cubans at Mexico border, unique Ghanian town, Shell’s Russia pain
100,000: Greece is set to ask the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged Russian war crimes in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Athens has an interest in leading the charge at the tribunal because Mariupol was home to 100,000 ethnic Greeks before the war, accounting for around one quarter of the population.
32,000: A record number of Cubans arrived at the US-Mexico border recently, with US customs officials detained 32,000 migrants last month alone, double the number of arrivals in February. This is in part because Nicaragua has lifted its visa requirements for Cubans, making it easier for them to reach Mexico via Nicaragua and the Northern triangle.
3: The Ghanaian village of Adamorobe is unique: 3% of the population is deaf. In 1975, village elders issued a decree banning deaf people from marrying one another to try to root out hereditary deafness, but that ban has now been lifted. Watch this fascinating video on the community by the BBC.
5 billion: Energy group Shell says it’s preparing to take a $5 billion hit in the first quarter of 2022 as a result of its decision to cease operations in Russia. Other Western oil companies like BP have also stopped joint ventures with Russian-state owned energy companies.
